    In sport, defense or defence (stressing the first syllable) is the action of preventing an opponent from scoring. The term may also refer to the tactics involved in defense, or a sub-team whose primary responsibility is defense.

    It originally became popular when Red Holzman took over as head coach of the New York Knicks in 1967 and emphasized team defense over offense. The sports section of the New York newspapers started headlining "DEFENSE."

    Madison Square Garden fans soon took up the chant of "De- fense, De-fense" which grew stronger with the Knicks' championship squads from 1970 and 1973--with players like Willis Reed and Frazier, Dave DeBusschere and Dick Barnett, Bill Bradley and Earl Monroe, Jerry Lucas and Phil Jackson.
