The Blackbird was a custom-built stealth-capable fighter from the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. According to executive producer David Eick it is not a Viper, though some parts for the craft were derived from scrapped Vipers.

    Creation
The Blackbird was designed by Chief Galen Tyrol in the second season episode, Flight of the Phoenix. Despite being a capable engineer, the chief had no experience in building vipers from scratch. The blackbird's engines were of a more primitive design than the rest of the fighters. In addition metal was at a premium and was needed for repairs on existing vipers. Lt Helo suggested that he use another material, the blackbird was thus fitted with a carbon based black material making the ship very difficult to detect on DRADIS.

    Armament
The Blackbird was unarmed. It was capable of being fitted with a surveillance kit. This was used by Starbuck in the initial reconnaissance to determine the function of the Resurrection Ship.

However, in the episode "Resurrection Ship, Part II", the fighter was shown to have a hardpoint for an anti-ship missile or possibly a nuclear missile. This was used to deliver an anti-ship missile, which destroyed the FTL drive on the Resurrection Ship.

    Current Status
Shortly after neutralizing the Resurrection Ship, the Blackbird collided with a wrecked raptor that was in flight formation and was destroyed.
