Chinese University of Hong Kong (commonly called CU or CUHK by locals, is not to be confused with CityU; Traditional Chinese: 香港中文大學; Cantonese: IPA: hœŋ55 kɔŋ35 tsʊŋ55 mɐn11 tɑɪ22 hɔk22, Jyutping: hoeng1 gong2 jung1 man4 dai6 hok6; Mandarin pinyin: Xiānggǎng Zhōngwén Dàxué) is the second oldest of the eight universities in Hong Kong; it is also the only collegiate university in Hong Kong--a fact its members are truly proud of. CU main campus, the biggest campus in HK, is located at Ma Liu Shui, Sha Tin, occupying a total area of 1.344 square kilometers. The motto of the University is 博文約禮, which translates as "to broaden one's intellectual horizon and keep within the bounds of propriety". These words, which come from the Analects of Confucius, suggest that both intellectual and moral aspects of life are emphasised in the school's teaching. Despite its name, English is also the official language of instruction at the university, along with Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese). Local students are expected, though generally not required, to be proficient in all three languages; similarly, most staff are proficient in English. In addition, most professional programs are taught in English, for example, its law programs.
History CUHK was founded in 1963 when New Asia College (新亞書院, founded 1949), Chung Chi College (崇基學院, 1951) and United College (聯合書院, 1956) were amalgamated. A fourth college, Shaw College (逸夫書院), was established and joined in 1986. New Constructions In 2006, the university received a sum of HK$270 million donation from the Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation and The S.H. Ho Foundation, to establish 2 new colleges named Morningside College (晨興書院) and S. H. Ho College (善衡書院). The two new colleges will be in full operation by 2012, in order to cater for the increase in student enrolment. Overview From CUHK's website: "Our Mission: To assist in the preservation, creation, application and dissemination of knowledge by teaching, research and public service in a comprehensive range of disciplines, thereby serving the needs and enhancing the well-being of the citizens of Hong Kong, China as a whole, and the wider world community." "Our vision: To be acknowledged locally, nationally and internationally as a first-class comprehensive research university whose bilingual and multicultural dimensions of student education, scholarly output and contribution to the community consistently meet standards of excellence." There are a total of 9 main faculties at CUHK: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business Administration, '''Faculty of Education''', '''Faculty of Engineering''', Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Science, School of Law, The Graduate School. Each faculty regulates different undergraduate degrees accordingly. Notice an interesting fact that the graduate school is a faculty by itself, what this means is that none of the other faculty is "in charge" of its own graduate degrees. For example, if you are a BA in music, then you would register your classes at the office of the Faculty of Arts, however, if you are a graduate student in the music program, then you will probably have to direct your administrative business to the Graduate School, and your academic inquiries to your teachers at the Faculty of Arts. Transportation The University takes full advantage of the well-established public transportation system in Hong Kong. The Kowloon-Canton Railway provides train services to the University in Ma Liu Shui, the New Territories, at the University Station. There are also different bus routes connecting CUHK's main campus to other parts of the city. Minibus also provide services to various part of the city, even in the mid-night. Once inside the vicinity of the main campus, one has the choice of walking to various parts of the univesrity, or catches a bus-ride provided by the school's internal bus service. Medical School The CUHK hosts one of only two medical schools in Hong Kong, the other being at the University of Hong Kong. Graduates from the CUHK Medical School are awarded by MBChB, the equivalent degree offered by HKU is M.B.B.S. Hong Kong's Prince of Wales Hospital and Shatin Hospitals are affiliated with CUHK Medical School, with Prince of Wales Hospital being the program's teaching facility and its base of reseaching operations.
