Bulla Island (Kharra Zira, Azeri: Bulla adası (Xərə Zirə)) is the largest island in the Caspian Sea within the Absheron Peninsula region (area: 3,5 km2, maximum length: 3,4 km, width: 2,6 km). The island has the akdalaite and aluminium deposite and a mud volcano. The island is a centre for the nearby offshore gas development of Bulla Deniz gas field, on production since 1968. It was the largest gas find in Azerbaijan before Shah-deniz and contains more than 4 Trillion cubic feet of gas reserves. The mass graves for many of the victims of Stalin's purges were found on the island in 70's, but to this day no memorial to them exists. In 1973 the scientific employee Mamedov found out 21 spheres in diameter of 60-70 millimeters. Spheres were "collected" each of two parts between which there was a "seam" on which it easily breaks up. The spheres consisted from light drop-shaped and dark particles*.
