The Brazilian Flag Anthem, or Hino à Bandeira Nacional, is an hymn dedicated to the country's flag. The lyrics were written by poet Olavo Bilac (being the only Brazilian anthem written by a poet rather than a politician), and the music composed by Francisco Braga. The anthem was presented by the first time in November 9, 1906 and was intended to be a replacement for the National Anthem. The Flag Anthem (as all other patriotic anthems and hymns) was highly praised in the past, especially during the 1964-1985 dictatorship but has lately lost some of its appeal. It is still performed on November 19 (Flag Day).
