Bonny is a town in southeast Nigeria, on the Bight of Biafra. It is a major export point for Nigerian oil being loaded onto tankers.
The region produces a type of crude oil known as Bonny Light oil. Much of the oil refined at Port Harcourt is piped to Bonny for export.
In 1821, Bonny was the birthplace of Jaja, a slave who would later free himself and come to dominate much of the city's trade through the Anna Pepple House. However, internal divisions forced Jaja and his followers to break away as the independent state of Opobo in 1867.
