    Bloomfield Hills is a city in Oakland County of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 3,940. Bloomfield Hills consistently ranks as one of the top five wealthiest cities in the United States consisting of over 1,000 households — it currently is listed at the number four position, and is the richest city outside of California or Florida. Bloomfield Hills is located in Michigan's wealthiest county*, Oakland County, and is located 14 miles outside of downtown Detroit.

    According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²). 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.00%) is water.

    Demographics
    As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,940 people, 1,520 households, and 1,167 families residing in the city. The population density was 307.3/km² (796.4/mi²). There were 1,628 housing units at an average density of 127.0/km² (329.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.69% White, 1.65% African American, 0.10% Native American, 6.57% Asian, 0.25% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.

    There were 1,520 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.9% were married couples living together, 3.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.84.

    In the city the population was spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 3.8% from 18 to 24, 13.8% from 25 to 44, 39.0% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females there were 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.8 males.

    The median income for a household in the city was $170,790, and the median income for a family was $200,000. Males had a median income of $100,000 versus $52,273 for females. The per capita income for the city was $104,920. About 1.8% of families and 3.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 6.4% of those age 65 or over.

    Education
    The city is served by the Bloomfield Hills School District, a public school district. The district * operates the International Academy *, a tuition-free, public consortium high school which offers the IB Diploma Programme and is consistently rated by Newsweek magazine among the top ten public high schools in the United States. It runs two main high schools, Andover High School *, and Lahser High School *. The district also offers a Model High School and an Alternative High School.
