Members of this Irish clan were very active in city government, and the ecclesiastical wardenship of County Galway. Sir Richard Blake was the speaker of the Assembly of Confederate Catholics. Principal estates were at Ardfry, Balglunin, Kiltullagh, Menlo, and Renville.

Blake is also a given name in some countries. It means either black, or pale. It originated from Old English blǣc(black) or blāc(pale).
