The Battle of Appomattox Station was fought on the penultimate day of the Appomattox Campaign during the American Civil War. On April 8, 1865, Maj. Gen. George Custer's Union cavalry, en route to Appomattox Station, clashed with the reserve artillery of the Confederate Third Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, under Colonel Lindsay Walker.
In the ensuing unique battle, the Confederate artillery without infantry support tried to hold against the Union cavalry. They had been ordered to hold the station until Gen. Robert E. Lee arrived, but were overwhelmed and abandoned three trainloads of supplies meant for Lee's army. Custer burned these supplies; as he was doing so, a counterattack by some other Confederates failed.
