All India Institute of Medical Studies (AIIMS) (created 1956) is a premier medical college located at New Delhi in India. It was ranked the top medical college in India in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005 by India Today. Academics Courses offered: MBBS course Every year AIIMS accepts 45 students based on the results of an all-India entrance examination for its prestigious MBBS program. The excellent reputation enjoyed by these students is mostly due to the stiff competition faced by them at this stage, where they compete against 60000 - 80000 other high school students. Another 5 foreign students (nominated by GOI) complete the class size of 50. AIIMS also specializes in paramedical and support facility training. Post-graduate courses There are about 42 specialty post-graduate courses conducted at AIIMS. The entry is through a nationwide competitive examination held every six months. These courses are highly coveted by the medical graduates throughout the country for the excellent medical services, exposure to unusual & referred cases as well as excellent opportunities for research. Ranking AIIMS is considered the premier medical institute in India. Excellence in teaching, patient care and research are its guiding principles. AIIMS has been ranked repeatedly at the top in its field by extensive annual surveys (starting in 1997) published by the highly reputed magazine, India-Today * MS-Word report of Gallup MBA India. In October 2006, Newsweek magazine ranked AIIMS among the top ten hospitals across the globe *. Medical curriculum at AIIMS is constantly evaluated, updated and modified to ensure standards that are exemplary for the rest of Indian medical colleges *. AIIMS graduates are members of the AIIMSonians which is an elite community with a very strong network all over the world. Integrating clinics and research AIIMS was originally built as a Superspeciality tertiary care centre with primary emphasis on research and specialized training facilities .There are at least 45 superspecialities at AIIMS. The clinical superspecialities in the same campus as the research facilities makes AIIMS optimally suited to nurture best quality translational research in India. However growing concern has been expressed that quality of scholars inducted in to AIIMS at postdoc and faculty levels has increasingly been deteriorating, mainly in view of nepotism. Moreover most medical students and residents who train at AIIMS don't stay at AIIMS ( primarily because of lack of professional opportunities and more lucrative options abroad). There are estimates to suggest that over the last few years as much as sixty percent AIIMS medical students have sailed to the United States. Medical Services The amount of services provided by AIIMS is truly staggering, with 1.5 million patients treated in its outpatient departments every year, and another 80,000 being treated as inpatients. Over 100,000 surgeries major and minor are performed every year. Some of India's best physicians, surgeons, researchers and young minds, with an academic environment that actively encourages free thinking, make up a stimulating milieu at AIIMS. The medical training & patient services offered by AIIMS are of superspecialty, tertiary care level. Annual surveys of educational institutions by India Today have showed it to topmost in India in its field * MS-Word report of Gallup MBA India. As per the AIIMS citizen's charter*, doctors & staff at AIIMS strive hard to provide comprehensive, high quality tertiary care services including specialty and super-specialty services to all without consideration of caste, creed, religion, sex, economic status or disability. However, there may be some deficiencies due to extreme patient load and finite resources. The medical services and investigational equipment at AIIMS are highly advanced. Acquiring newer equipment for investigation, research and patient care is expedited as it is not constrained by funds. In fact, AIIMS is comparable to some of the best medical institutions of the world. Specialty Centres at AIIMS There is a separate cardiothoracic and neurosciences centre (CNC) offering superspecialty level patient care, training and research in the respective fields. Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences * is a 300 bedded ophthalmic (eyes) specialty centre devoted to the education, research and patient care. It is designated as the apex eye referral centre for India and is the WHO collaborating centre for ophthalmic programs. Recently the specialty building is the Dr. BR Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital has been added, which deals with medical, radiation and surgical oncology. Life on campus AIIMS is a residential university in which the faculty members, staff and the students live on campus (main campus and a few others). There are 8 hostels for undergraduate students (5 for boys and 1 for girls) with a capacity to accommodate 850 students. There are separate hostels for the postgraduate students (3 in Gent's hostel campus, 1 in Ladies hostel campus and a few others in and around campus). Students of AIIMS have always spear headed academic and extra-academic movements in the country. '''''Pulse''''' the annual festival of AIIMS is the biggest inter-college festival of the medical fraternity of India, and probably whole Asia. Travel & Directions AIIMS is located in South Delhi, at the crossing of the Ring Road with Aurbindo Marg. The address is: AIIMS, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi (India). Pin Code - 110029. Specifying the name & title of addressee along with department, centre and/or location (e.g. Hostel room no./Quarter no.) is required for proper mail redirection. Recent construction of a clover-leaf design grade separator road system at the "AIIMS crossing" has rationalised the traffic and made it convenient to approach AIIMS. New Delhi railway station is located about 10 kms and the IGI airport is located about 15 kms from AIIMS. Eminently approachable by road and generally known to the layman & transporters as "Medical", private & DTC buses (particularly Mudrika service), taxis and autorickshaws servicing AIIMS ply throughout the day; a night service also runs after 11 pm. There is a plan to extend the Delhi Metro connecting New Delhi with AIIMS onwards to IIT and Mehrauli. Nearby markets like Yusuf Sarai, INA market, Dilli Haat, South Extension & Green Park have an excellent range of food, goods & services available, along with a wide selection of Hotels / Inn for travellers. Achievements AIIMS announced its ambitious stem cell program on the February 23, 2005, including the use of stem cell transplants to treat potentially fatal conditions including terminal cardiac, pancreatic and other ailments. AIIMS was the first Indian center to perform a cardiac transplant. Institutional Quota Prior to Supreme court judgement of 25th Aug, 2001 and changes in institutional quota, AIIMS was criticised for the way 33% of Post Graduation Seats were reserved for those who complete their MBBS in AIIMS. This has been rectified and now admissions to the post-graduate courses at AIIMS are much sought after from medical graduates throughout the country. The is now a curtain on the controversy for the present, since the Supreme Court judgement has in effect clearly defined the administrative intricacies and application of rules. The results of current AIIMS PG entrance examination are available online - http://www.aiims.edu/aiims/events/result/aiimspg-jul06.htm The honorable Supreme Court of India, stated that reserving 33 per cent seats for institutional candidates was in effect 100 per cent reservation for subjects, which was declared ultra vires the Constitution, and, hence, was struck down. . The quota has been quashed by the Supreme Court as per its Judgment in the year 2001. Caste Based Quota The anti reservation students of AIIMS protested in May 2006 against further reservation for backward classes. A lot of students offered fast unto death. They opposed the Prime Minister's appeal, putting the patients into discomfort as treatment was declined to them. This strike continued till 31st May when the doctors called off their struke after the Supreme Court of India orders. These students stood under the umbrella of an organisation named Youth for Equality and protested against reservations for backward classes. There is also a section of AIIMS students and doctors who have traditionally taken a pro-reservation stance on the basis of social justice. This view point did not receive much media or press coverage. This could be considered predictive of their ideological minority status on campus or media bias against them. This was not the first time that the apolitical Students Union of AIIMS has stood up to the ruling powers. The students union was banned during the Emergency (1977) and its President (Dr Yaten Kumar aka YK) discharged honourably from the Institute. During the Emergency, AIIMS Students Union was the first organisation in the country to go on strike. 2006 Controversy over AIIMS autonomy AIIMS doctors again went on a flash strike in June-July 2006 over the issue of increasing political interference in the institution by the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss.• The doctors decided to go on strike following the controversial sacking of P. Venugopal, the former director of AIIMS. Venugopal challenged his sacking in the court of law,• and the strike ended following the Delhi High Court's decision staying Venugopal's sacking on July 7, 2006.• However, Ramadoss filed an appeal in the Supreme Court of India against the stay on the removal of AIIMS Director on the same day.• On July 25, the government offered to withdraw its order sacking Venugopal but would raise charges against him before a single-bench court.• During this controversy some patients of AIIMS died due to lack of treatment. • Notable faculty and Alumni | |||||||
