The municipal seat is located in Järpen with some 1,500 inhabitants; the village itself has a population of about 1,000. Åre, close to Mt. It will host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2007. 25% of the municipal industry is based on tourism, most notably the skiing resorts in Åre and Storlien. Åre would also have been the secondary site for the alpine events of Östersund in its bid for the organization of the XXIInd Olympic Winter Games, the 2014 Winter Olympics.
