The population in 2001 is 3,122, its density is 179.1/km² and the area is 17.43 km². It is the third-largest and the second leastly populated parish in Lagoa. It is also the largest in Lagoa. Água de Pau has a school, a lyceum, a gymnasia, churches and a square.
History Água de Pau is one of the many oldest villages in the Azores, it became a parish on July 28, 1500. The island was destroyed in the Earthquake of 1522, it was rebuilt on November 10, 1525. Água de Pau became a municipality on July 28, 1515, fifteen years after its founding for carta régia of Don Manuel I. The councul was located outside in Ribeira Chã.
